Who are we?

Playing for Success (PfS) is a national learning programme based at sports grounds around the country. It is aimed mainly at 10-14 year olds who are at risk of underachieving. There are 162 PfS study centres nationally.

PfS makes a direct contribution to the Government's Children's Plan (December 2007) which reinforces the message that out of school hours learning can help close the attainment gap, can personalise and make learning fun and can help young people fulfil their potential.

PfS Kirklees is a partnership between the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), Kirklees Council and five Kirklees based sports clubs: Huddersfield Town FC, Batley Bulldogs RLFC, Dewsbury Rams RLFC, Thongsbridge Tennis Club and Huddersfield Giants RLFC.

All Kirklees schools are invited to attend the study centre based in the sports ground closest to them. Centres are exciting and stimulating places for young people to learn. Students at the centres are supported in the key skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT. Children leave the centres with improved skills, motivation and self-esteem, giving them a real boost and, in many cases, a new start on which they can build back at school.

Each centre is managed by an experienced teacher who is supported by an assistant and volunteer mentors. Centres provide access to state of the art IT equipment. They open out of school hours and use the stimulus of sport and ICT to motivate pupils. Typically, each student receives 30 hours of tuition.
